DEATH DIDN’T COME TODAY. Night had fallen, and the lure of sleep tugged on me. I dragged myself to my feet and dumped the now cold tea.

Maybe tomorrow, I told myself as I brushed my teeth.

I ignored the little voice that whispered it wasn’t normal to wish for Death. I understood that, but normal was boring. Normal didn’t take you on adventures around the world.

Normal didn’t introduce you to Death.

I remembered the first time we met. It had been an autumn day in New Zealand. I was waiting for the tour to start. I was finally seeing where The Hobbit had been filmed. My excitement was palatable. An older man collapsed and the medics were called. Their attempts to revive him were fruitless. That was when I saw Death.

No one else seemed aware of him. I watched him weave through the crowd. He was reaching for the body when our eyes met. Confusion flitted across his pale face. Later that night, I saw him again. He didn’t understand why I saw him. It wasn’t my time.

When, I asked.

He shrugged. One day. Then he was gone. I have been waiting for him ever since.

EXCERPT
A rainbow of color swirled around Keane like a thick fog. They mixed before separating like oil and water. All was silent, nor were there any smells or scents. Nothing was tangible. He didn’t even have a form. Yet, Keane drifted through it as if it were real. He existed.

Others lived in the void with him. He never saw them, and they made no sounds. He knew they were there, though. He sensed their being. He’d feel when they would collide. Energy crackled as they fought for dominance. He always knew when one absorbed another. They left him alone. Unlike them, he was ageless. To challenge him was certain suicide. He was content with that.

Every so often, something penetrated the void. It crackled against him and promised more energy. A primal hunger drove him to follow. The force pulled him into the human’s mind. Sounds, sights, and scents crashed into him as he experienced the human’s emotion. They filled him up until he felt as if he would explode. It was too much. He didn’t understand how humans handled the barrage. Didn’t it hurt? He escaped back to the numbness of his home as fast as he could.

READER REVIEWS
Sarah Foster rated it 4 stars.
A Quick Spell is a fun collection of short fantasy stories that focus on everything from magic and witchcraft to monsters, angels, and gods. As a slow reader, I appreciate a book that I can read in one sitting, and this was definitely a fun escape for an afternoon of reading.

C.D. Gallant-King rated it 5 stars.
Writing a short story is hard - it's incredibly difficult to properly build a setup and twist into just a few thousand words. Patricia does it here again and again with only two hundred words, and it's a treat to watch her set a hook and then pay it off in so many different ways, in so many settings and styles.

EXCERPT
It was a well-known fact that vampires only came out at night. They prowled the shadows, snatching any fool dumb enough to venture out after the sun had set.

Parents taught their children about the danger, which prompted teenagers to dare each other to face the darkness. Most of the youths chickened out once they were standing at the open door with inky blackness stretched out before them. Those who didn’t were found dead and drained the next morning.

Only through vigilance did the village survive. “Don’t go out after dark” was beaten into the residents’ heads. Sometimes literally.

They hoped that by denying the vampires victims, the undead would leave in search of easier prey. The villagers didn’t think about the others who would suffer when that happened. It was a matter of survival, and those people would have to learn if they wanted to live. At least, that’s what they told themselves to ease their guilt.

But the vampires weren’t going anywhere. Immortality granted an abundance of patience. They just had to wait long enough, and the villagers would become compliant. They would forget why they feared the night. They would come out. And then...the feast would begin.

Toinette rated it 5 stars.
This is one of the most interesting paranormal/dark fantasy books I've read in a while. This is a collection of short stories, and I mean short as in 200 words, that packs a lot of punch.

JFraser rated it 5 stars.
This book completely pulled me in! I really enjoyed the format of 200-word stories. These are fascinating snippets from a variety of viewpoints.
