Do Vampires Have to Drink Blood?

1/27/2020

Vampires are more than just bloodsucking undead who burst into flames in the sun. Here are 4 unusual vampires to sink your teeth into by Patricia Josephine.
As you know, I love vampires. Tell me there is a vampire in the story and I am there. For a while, when it came to writing, it seemed like my muse only gave me vampire ideas. Vampires are never going away, but you don't have to be limited to blood sucking undead that burst into flames in sunlight. There are five types of vampires that are more than bloodsuckers.

Sexual Vampires
Also known as a succubus or incubus, a sexual vampire sustains themselves by absorbing the sexual life force energies of the living. This usually happens during an orgasm. Partners may be willing or unwilling. Bodily fluids do not have to be consumed. They can absorb the energy psychically.

Emphatic Vampire
This vampire is sort of in the same vein as a sexual vampire. The main difference is they aren't limited to sex. They feed on the emotion of the people around them. You probably won't find fangs on these vampires as they aren't consuming the emotion via blood. Emotion can be positive or negative, but most often if it is negative the vampire is feeding from, they are the cause of those emotions and can scar the victim.

Psi-Vampires
This type of vampire usually don't harm those they feed on. They live on life force and the ability can work on single victims or crowds. Usually, victims don't notice they are being fed on. Depending on how much the vampire takes, effects can be as minor as fatigue. It is possible for a psi-vampire to drain a person to death.

Fat-Sucking Vampires
This last entry is one I know little about. It was mentioned during MIParaCon on a talk about vampires. I made a note because this was a twist on the myth I had never heard. Can you imagine if the sparking Twilight vampires drank fat?

This vampire originates from Peru, and yes, it really does drink fat.  "A pale-skinned vampire/bogeyman who roams the Andes and kills peasants in order to drain them of their body fat, the legend of the Pishtaco was basically plucked directly from the real-life horrors experienced by the indigenous communities of Peru and Bolivia during colonization in the 15th century." (source)

So, there you have it. Four vampires who don't only suck blood. Which one is your favorite? Have you heard of any other vampires that don't drink blood? What is your favorite vampire story? Just think how much that last one could make doing liposuctions?
The show What We Do in the Shadows features an emotional vampire. He's a hoot.

A fat sucking vampire doing liposuction sounds like a hilarious comedy.

The energy sucking vampires are real. I wonder if they realize they're doing it, though. But I've been around them, and I feel the drop in energy after.

I believe it. There are some people who just suck your energy away.

I was totally going to mention the emotional vampire in What We Do in the Shadows like Alex! He's fantastic. I'd pay the fat sucking vamp to do his thing!

I've only recently seen What We Do in the Shadows and it was the movie version. There's a TV show, too, isn't there?

I think a fat-sucking vampire would be quite handy to have around. If you come across one, send him my way...

I'd never heard of a fat sucking vampire! I could use one of those right now...you know, minus the whole killing thing.

Yes, it would only be useful if the vampire didn't kill you in the process.

Great list! I've heard a lot about psychic and sexual vampires over the years, but this is my first time hearing about fat-sucking ones, I think!

I've only seen this one instance. It's definitely a niche vampire. LOL

I thought that I was pretty vampire knowledgeable but will admit the fat sucking one is new to me. Interesting #anythinggoes

I'm such an annoying purist when it comes to vampires. But these non-blood feeders are interesting variations.

Aside from the obvious choice of the original Dracula, one of my favorite vampire stories was Love at First Bite. Oh, and Dark Shadows. Loved Barnabas Collins

I love a good blood sucker just as much, but these vampires I had to share because they were interesting takes.

Interesting post! I included an emphatic vampire in one of my recent books, but I was thinking "emotional vampire." They sound like the same thing.

The fat-sucking vampires sound awesome. If only they didn't kill us, they'd have willing "victims" lining up around the block.

I think empathic and emotional vampires are pretty close.
